The Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Mass Railway Transit Railway Line runs under the metropolis of the Bangkok city and provides an avenue for public transport between Rama IV Road at Hualumpong and Rama IX at Ratchadapisek.

The line runs for eleven kilometres of underground tunnel and includes 9 underground stations.

Each station is approximately 10,500 sq. meters in area and generally comprises of three levels; concourse, upper platform and a lower platform.

EEC Lincolne Scott provided mechanical and electrical engineering services to the project, which included the concept design, definitive design, detailed design, coordinated services drawings and structural opening drawings for the nine stations, ventilation shafts and tunnels.

The scope of works included the design engineering for:

                   • Mechanical ventilation.
                   • Environmental air conditioning & control.
                   • Hydrant, hose reels and sprinklers.
                   • Fire suppression.
                   • Sanitary and waste-water.
                   • Hot and cold water.
                   • Medium voltage duel supply power reticulation.
                   • Stand-by power generation.
                   • UPS distribution.
                   • Platform lighting.
                   • Evacuation lighting.
                   • General lighting and power.
                   • Early warning fire alarm.
                   • Voice and Data communications.

High voltage DC power drives the Alstom Trains through the railway lines.

Regeneration facilities on the trains are provided to take advantage of the trains breaking to back-feed to the grid network and allow very substantial economic savings in power consumption.

The design of the DC earthing system is critical for the operation and safety of the system.
